High schoolers in Western New York can immerse themselves in the U.S. legal system this fall through a free civics program hosted by the Supreme Court Historical Society.
The "Supreme Court and My Hometown" program unites about 30 students from Buffalo and Rochester to study the landmark First Amendment case, West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette.
This rulingโinvolving mandatory flag salutes in public schoolsโis a cornerstone of free speech, with Justice Robert H. Jackson of Western New York pivotal in the decision.
Participants will connect with federal judges, observe real court sessions, and network with courthouse professionals, emphasizing history and legal process over mock trial skills.
The course concludes with a collaborative capstone: students create museum-style exhibits on the case and Justice Jackson, displayed in local courthouses.
Open to area 10th, 11th, and 12th graders, applications are due April 24, 2026.
This hands-on experience fosters future leaders in law, history, and public service. Read More... |
